Georg Uschmann

Georg Uschmann (born October 18, 1913 in Naumburg , † September 13, 1986 in Jena ) was a German science historian and director of the Leopoldina archive .

Life

Uschmann studied zoology and botany as well as history, philosophy and physical exercise at the University of Jena from 1933 to 1939 . In 1937 he became a member of the NSDAP . In 1938 he was an assistant at the Ernst-Haeckel-Haus (EHH) Jena, the then "Institute for the History of Zoology, especially Development Studies" under the direction of Victor Franz . In 1939 he completed his studies with the work The morphobiological concept of perfection in Goethe and its problem-historical connections . From 1940 he was a soldier in World War II , most recently as a captain.

He was in Soviet captivity until 1950 and then returned to the Ernst Haeckel House. In 1952 he became senior assistant. 1959 followed the habilitation.

He became a lecturer in the history of biology and was director of the Ernst Haeckel House from 1959 to 1979. From 1962 Uschmann was also a professor with a teaching position and from 1965 a full professor for the history of natural sciences at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. In 1963 he was Vice Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

In 1964 he became a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina and in 1967 director of the Leopoldina archive. He was a corresponding member of the Académie internationale d'histoire des sciences .

Honors

In 1978 he received the Leopoldina Medal of Merit .

In 1997, the Georg Uschmann Prize for the History of Science was founded by the couple Eugen and Ilse Seibold , which is awarded every two years at the Leopoldina's annual meeting for an excellent dissertation in the fields of the history of science or medicine.
