Baron Georg Wilhelm von Wedekind (born July 28, 1796 in Strasbourg , † January 22, 1856 in Darmstadt ) was a German forester .

Life

Georg Wilhelm von Wedekind's father was the doctor Georg Wedekind . His sons Georg and Wilhelm were members of the Hessian state parliament . He was married to Wilhelmina Margarethe, nee (von) Schubert.

From the spring of 1812 he studied auxiliary forest sciences for a year at the Georg-August University of Göttingen and then switched to further specialist training at the Drei 30acker forest academy headed by Johann Matthäus Bechstein . Already during his training he entered the Hessian service as a hunting squire in 1812. This was followed by the assessor, then in 1814 the military service, in which he served as a lieutenant in the staff of Prince Emil of Hesse. In 1816 he was appointed forester , in 1821 to the Oberforstrat, and in 1848 to the Secret Oberforstrat.

The Hessian Forest Code of 1837 and the Hessian Litter Usage Act of 1839 can be traced back to Wedekind's drafts .

Wedekind developed an avid writing and journalistic activity in the field of forest sciences. For many years he edited the Allgemeine Forst- und Jagdzeitung . He was editor of the New Yearbooks of Forestry . In Darmstadt he became a member of the Masonic Lodge "Johannes der Evangelist zur Eintracht".

He was politically active from an early age. In 1816 he actively campaigned for the freedom of the press , later for the introduction of the railroad and pioneering the Hessian trade association. Several times he was elected to the second chamber of the Hessian estates , but prevented from exercising because the government always refused him the vacation required for this. In 1848 he took part as a member of the pre-parliament and ran for the Frankfurt National Assembly in the Alsfeld-Lauterbach constituency , but was defeated. In 1848 he acquired the Hiltersklingen estate and forest in the Odenwald , where a memorial commemorates him. He retired from active service in 1852.
