Georg Oskar Immanuel von Hase (born December 15, 1878 in Leipzig , † January 13, 1971 in Jena ) was a German naval officer, publisher and writer.

Life

Georg von Hase was born in Leipzig in 1878 as the son of the publisher Oskar von Hase and the grandson of the publisher Karl von Hase and the Germanist Friedrich Zarncke . He attended the Neue Nikolaischule Leipzig , but after successfully completing the grammar school went, contrary to family tradition, as a sea cadet to the Imperial Navy instead of to the university. On board the SMS Stein von Hase crossed the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the North Atlantic and in 1897 took part in a mission to enforce German claims against Haiti.

In 1909 Georg von Hase married the Hamburg merchant's daughter Eleanor Heygster, with whom he had four children. For his service in the Navy in World War I , von Hase received the Iron Cross, first and second class. He was promoted several times and ended up being a frigate captain . About his participation as an artillery officer in the Skagerrakschlacht on the SMS Derfflinger he wrote the book " The two white peoples ", which was also published in English and in French. Further publications about the sea battle followed.

After the First World War, von Hase said goodbye to seafaring and became a bookseller's trainee at KF Koehler. In 1919 he moved to Leipzig- Gohlis without his wife but with his children . His first marriage was divorced in 1920 and he married Johanna Steche, the daughter of the entrepreneur Albert Steche , with whom he had two children.

Von Hase, who in 1920 had already become co-owner of Hermann Schultze and EF Steinacker and authorized signatory of KF Koehler, was appointed Finnish Vice Consul in 1921. In 1923 he became a board member of Koehler and Volckmar, today Koch, Neff and Volckmar . The commercial activity did not seem to lie with von Hase, which led to repeated difficulties in his area, so that in 1935 he left the group management. He retired to his country estate in Jena and devoted himself more to writing.

In 1941 he was a consultant at the High Command of the Navy in Berlin and in 1944 dismissed for reasons of age. Georg's brother Hermann, who was a staunch National Socialist and member of the NSDAP, died in the Volkssturm in the Battle of Berlin in April 1945, his nephew Paul was involved in the assassination attempt on Hitler and was executed in August 1944.

Georg von Hase became deputy port commander in Rotterdam and experienced the end of the war in Jena after his recall.

A brief activity as head of the Jena Cultural Association he had to end again in 1947 due to his earlier publications. He then turned to the chronicle of his family.

Georg von Hase died in Jena in 1971.
