Georg August Paul Freiherr von Stackelberg ( Russian Георгий Карлович Штакельберг transcribed Georgi Karlovich Schtakelberg * July 30 jul. / 11. August  1851 greg. In Pölwa , † July 25 jul. / 7. August  1913 greg. In Hungerburg ) was a Russian general of the cavalry .

Georg came from the Estonia- based German-Baltic aristocratic family Stackelberg and studied at the Kaiser Nikolai Academy from 1862. In 1875 he distinguished himself as the commander of a Cossack unit on the expedition in the Khiva and Kokand Khanate under General Konstantin von Kaufman . From August 18, 1886 to December 5, 1890, Stackelberg was regiment chief of the 25th Dragoon Regiment in Kazan . On December 3, 1897, he received command of the Trans-Caspian Cossack Division and on May 31, 1899, command of the 15th Cavalry Division. Stackelberg commanded the Russian 10th Cavalry Division when the Boxer Rebellion was suppressed in China in 1900 and during the subsequent occupation of Manchuria .

From April 25, 1901 to November 1902 he was commanding general of the 2nd Siberian Army Corps , then from November 2, 1902 to February 3, 1904, commander of the 1st Cavalry Corps. In the Russo-Japanese War he took over the leadership of the 1st Siberian Army Corps on April 5, 1904 . The Russian commander-in-chief Kuropatkin was forced to leave a large part of his army at Liaoyang , as Japanese troops were a few days' march southeast of it. On June 5, 3/4 of Stackelberg's units had arrived around Te-li-ssu, but Kuropatkin's orders prevented him from advancing. The 1st Siberian Corps played the central role in the battle of Te-li-ssu (June 14/15, 1904) in the battle with the Japanese 2nd Army under General Oku Yasukata . The right Russian wing was in danger of being encircled in the battle, a counterattack got stuck on June 15th, Stackelberg was able to withdraw his units in an orderly manner, but the Japanese artillery claimed further heavy losses. Then his troops fought on July 24th and 25th, 1904 together with the 4th Siberian Corps under General Nikolai Sarubajew in the Battle of Tashihchiao .

In the Battle of Sandepu (January 25-29 , 1905) Stackelberg's corps was subordinate to the 2nd Manchurian Army under General Oskar Grippenberg . Stackelberg ignored an order from Kuropatkin and, with the help of Mishchenko's cavalry, took part of the village of Sandepu. Then Grippenberg granted his troops a day of rest on January 27th. The target assigned to Stackelberg's troops was still in Japanese hands and, despite the existing rest order, the latter attacked. 6,000 Russian soldiers fell or were wounded and Stackelberg had to withdraw without having achieved anything. Grippenberg and Stackelberg were both relieved of their command after the battle.
