George Albert Soper

George Albert Soper (born February 2, 1870 in New York City , † June 17, 1948 in Hampton Bays , Suffolk County, New York, USA) was an American hygienist . He became known when he discovered Mary Mallon as a silent carrier of typhus and an index patient in March 1907 .

He was the son of Georgianna Lydia Buckman († 1882) and George Albert Soper (1837-1869). On January 18, 1895, he married Mary Virginia, McLeod in Troy, New York .

Career

Soper attended schools in France and Switzerland and graduated from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1895 . In 1898 he was at the Columbia University Master of Civil Engineering , where he in 1899 for Ph.D. received his doctorate. He worked as an engineer at the Boston Metropolitan Waterworks and reported in 1900 on practical experience in the sterilization of drinking water with ozone . He later moved to the filter manufacturer Cumberland Manufacturing Company , where he was involved in reconstruction work after the Galveston Hurricane (1900) . From 1902 he worked in the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and in 1904 took part as a specialist in the control of typhoid with 1,300 infected people in Ithaca (City, New York) .

As a typhus expert in Watertown and other cities, he discovered the patient Mary Mallon in March 1907 . She saw alleged stalking in Soper's hygienic interest in her urine, stool and blood samples and defended herself with a carving fork. At Soper's instigation, the New York City Department of Health arranged for Sara Josephine Baker to investigate Mary Mallons.

After the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, Soper investigated the situation in the Atlantic with regard to drift ice . He was a ventilation specialist on the Rapid Transit Commission and advised the Department of Housing .

Soper was also a member of the NY Bay Pollution Commissin and 1914 and 1915 Chairman of the Metropolitan Sewage Commission of NY (Wastewater Commission)

During the First World War he fought as a major in the Army Medical Department (United States) .

Soper was an honorary fellow at the Royal Sanitary Institute for 21 months .

From 1923 to 1928 he was executive director of the American Society for the Control of Cancer .
