Georges Rebelo Chicoti (born June 16, 1955 in Dondi , Huambo Province ) is an Angolan politician and was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Angola between 2010 and 2017 .

Life

George Chicoti spent most of his childhood in Zambia and did not come to Angola until 1975. He soon became a confidante of UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi . In the 1980s he was one of the first UNITA members to be sent to the Ivory Coast to study. In Abidjan , George Chikoti stood out as a political activist and was part of a strong lobby that UNITA had in West Africa. As a result, he traveled to several francophone countries. Later he went to France to study urban planning and urban development in Paris .

However, his relationship with the Unita leadership cooled down considerably during this time (one suspected intrigues on his part against the leadership) and he was ordered to return to Angola. Chicoti resisted and went to Canada instead ; he suspected that UNITA's political influence there was much less. He then went to Portugal , where he formed the Fórum Democrático Angolano ( German : Angolan Democratic Forum ), which attracted many supporters of the Unita. The group was officially legalized in Angola on April 14, 1992.

The Angolan Democratic Forum took part in the first elections in Angola and won a seat in the National Assembly in Luanda . George Chikoti had come closer to the MPLA politically and was later appointed Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs. He then left Unita to join the MPLA, which many Unita members viewed as treason. But nobody doubts his competence.

He is fluent in English, French, Portuguese and Umbundu and Bemba .

On the evening of July 12, 2011, Chicoti received Chancellor Angela Merkel at Luanda Airport to kick off her short visit to Angola .

On 28 September 2017 he was sent to the office of President of Angola João Lourenço by Manuel Domingos Augusto replaced as foreign minister. He himself was in 2018 ambassador in Belgium and at the same time as ambassador in personal union Luxembourg accredited .
