George Johnstone (born December 15, 1914 in Caldercruix , † September 11, 1974 ) was a Scottish football goalkeeper .

Career

George Johnstone was born in 1914 in Caldercruix , a small village about five miles east of Airdrie . Johnstone played in junior football for Bothwellhaugh Athletic and Benburb FC. In May 1936 Johnstone moved to Aberdeen FC . During the Second World War he was a guest player at Celtic Glasgow , Hamilton Academical and FC St. Mirren . After the war, Johnstone was number one in Aberdeen and reached the Scottish Cup final against Hibernian Edinburgh with this in 1947 . The game was won 2-1 at Hampden Park . In the same year he was defeated with the Dons in the final of the first league cup against the Glasgow Rangers . In the 1949/50 season Johnstone played for the Scottish second division club Dunfermline Athletic . With the club he personally reached the league cup final again . This was lost to the first division club East Fife . After the club had also missed promotion, the goalkeeper switched to the Raith Rovers from the first division. Until 1955 he stayed with the Rovers and completed 110 first division games. After that, Johnstone played even though he was already over 40 years old in the following years for Greenock Morton , Thornton Hibernian, FC Cowdenbeath , FC Newburgh and Nairn Thistle.
