George Washington Goethals

George Washington Goethals (born June 29, 1858 in Brooklyn , † January 21, 1928 in Manhattan ) was an officer in the United States Army and engineer .

Life

Goethals studied at the City College of New York and at the US Military Academy in West Point . In 1880 he finished his studies and became an officer in the United States Army Corps of Engineers . In 1891 he was promoted to captain .

In 1906, the USA began construction work on the Panama Canal under the direction of Major General George Washington Goethals . An encounter with Goethals and his tour of the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal is described by Kaiser Wilhelm II in his book " Veranstaltungen und Gestalten". In 1912 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 1913 to the American Philosophical Society . From 1914 to 1917 Goethals was the first civilian governor of the Panama Canal Zone . A monument is dedicated to him in Panama and a bridge connecting Staten Island with New Jersey is named after him in New York City . His descendants live all over the United States, and one branch also ends in Germany.
