George Wichert

George Henry Robert Wichert (* 7. October 1811 in Königsberg in Prussia ; † 7. April 1876 in Magdeburg ) was a German classical philologist , Latin scholar of the modern age and school principal.

Life

Georg Wichert was a son of the married couple Gottfried Ernst and Maria Elisabeth Wichert. He finished his school career in his hometown at the old town high school under the direction of Karl Ludwig Struve . He then studied at the Albertus University in Königsberg under Christian August Lobeck , Johann Friedrich Herbart and Friedrich Wilhelm Schubert . After his doctorate as Dr. phil. he started his first job as a teacher at the grammar school in Tilsit in 1834. In 1844 he moved to the Kneiphöfische Stadtgymnasium in his hometown, where he was a high school professor until the end of September 1857schooled. Then he became the director of the high school in Guben .

Wichert was appointed director of the cathedral grammar school in Magdeburg on January 15, 1862 . He remained in this position until 1876. He died of a heart attack .

Wichert was considered a “master in the use of the Latin language ” and achieved excellent results in this area. He received special attention for his work The Latin Style , published in 1956 and dedicated to his teacher Christian August Lobeck zu Königsberg.
