Georges Hébert (born April 27, 1875 in Paris , † August 2, 1957 in Tourgéville) was a French naval officer . He is considered to be the developer of the Méthode Naturelle .

Life

When he was stationed in the small town of St. Pierre on Martinique in 1902 , he organized an escape from a volcanic eruption - which killed 26,000 people - and was able to save 700 people. This event played an important role in the development of the later Méthode Naturelle , because it reinforced his basic idea that it is very important to combine athletic skills with helpfulness, selflessness and bravery.

Primarily for the development of this he was honored in 1955 by the French government for his lifetime achievement.

Méthode Naturelle

The Méthode Naturelle , also called Hébertisme , is a type of physical and mental training developed by Hébert , in which the own body is trained in many natural disciplines . Hébert was inspired to use this method on a trip to Africa , during which he was amazed at the physical condition of people living in nature.

The volcanic eruption played an important role in the development of the Hébertisme because it reinforced his idea that it is extremely important to combine athletic ability with helpfulness, selflessness and bravery. This is also reflected in a motto of the Méthode Naturelle, which says: “Être fort pour être utile” (“Be strong in order to be useful”).

After Hébert was back in France , he defined the basic statutes of the Méthode Naturelle. He taught the Méthode Naturelle in the university area and tried there to pass both the physical and psychological teaching on to his students. At its core, this represents a stringent vehicle for the efficient increase in body control through consistent physical and mental training.

The training for the body was very comprehensive and consisted of the parts

The training took place partly in the great outdoors and partly in “ parks ” made by Hébert, which were similar to huge fitness trails .

The Méthode Naturelle became standard training for the French military and was also practiced in other parts of Europe. Thanks to the art of locomotion developed by David Belle , Sébastien Foucan and others - parkour - the Méthode Naturelle is becoming increasingly popular.

In 1913 Hébert took over the management of the national Collège d'athlètes de Reims . This was founded by the IOC Vice President, the Marquis de Polignac, to counteract the decline of French sport at the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 .
