Hugnet came into contact with the Surrealists in 1926 , took part in many of their activities, wrote poetry, created collages , wrote books and designed book covers for Surrealist publications, also in collaboration with his friend Joan Miró. In 1929 his film La Perle was presented in the Ursulines studio in Paris. In the 1930s, Hugnet was a member of the surrealist movement. André Breton became interested in him after reading Hugnet's article Spirit of Dada in Painting ; Tristan Tzara introduced them to each other. In 1936 Hugnet was involved in the organization of the International Surrealist Exhibition in the New Burlington Galleries in London . In 1939 he was excluded from the movement because he did not want to give up his friendship with the disgraced poet Paul Éluard .

In 1940 Hugnet married his first wife, Germaine Pied ; this marriage lasted ten years and remained childless. In 1950 Hugnet married the seventeen year old Myrtille Hubert . The following year his son Nicolas Hugnet was born.

With the support of his father - a French furniture maker - Hugnet set up a publishing house, Les Editions de la Montagne , to publish his works and those of his friends, including Tristan Tzara, Pierre de Massot and Gertrude Stein .

Hugnet wrote and translated numerous scripts and illustrated books until his death in 1974.
