Georges Schneider (ski racer)
Georges Schneider (born July 11, 1925 in La Chaux-de-Fonds , † September 10, 1963 in Stans ) was a Swiss ski racer . In the late 1940s and 1950s he was one of the most successful international athletes in the slalom and giant slalom disciplines .
biography
Schneider first appeared internationally at the 1948 Winter Olympics ; in St. Moritz he finished 13th in slalom. Two years later he celebrated the greatest success of his career when he won the world championship title in the same discipline at the 1950 World Championships in Aspen . As a result, there were no further medal wins at major events. At the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo in 1952 he was fifth in the giant slalom, four years later in Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1956 (where he had been the flag bearer during the opening ceremony) also fifth in the slalom.
Schneider won the slalom of the prestigious Arlberg-Kandahar races in St. Anton am Arlberg in 1949 , as well as the slalom at the International Ski Days at Chuenisbärgli in Adelboden in 1956 and 1957 . He was Swiss champion seven times . After his sports career ended in 1960, Schneider coached the Swiss national ski team. Three years later he was killed in a hunting accident.
