Georges Vedel

Georges Vedel (born July 5, 1910 in Auch , Département Gers ; † February 21, 2002 ) was a French lawyer who became a member of the Académie française in 1998 .

Life

After attending the French Lycée in occupied Mainz and a Lycée in Toulouse , Vedel studied law and philosophy at the University of Toulouse and graduated in 1936 with the Agrégation in public law . He was then a lecturer at the University of Poitiers and then from 1939 to 1949 at the University of Toulouse, before he was Professor of Public Law at the University of Paris between 1949 and 1979 . During this time he was legal advisor to the French delegation in the negotiations on the Common Market and the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) from 1956 to 1957 and also Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Paris between 1962 and 1967 . At times he was also a professor at the so-called “Sciences Po”, the Institut d'études politiques de Paris , the École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris and at the École des hautes études commerciales (HEC) .

Vedel, who was a member of the Economic and Social Council from 1969 to 1979, was also President of the Center for Studies on Revenues and Costs (CERC) between 1976 and 1980. In 1980 he was appointed a member of the Conseil constitutionnel , the constitutional court of which he was a member until 1989. In 1985 he was awarded the Grand Prize of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques and in 1993 was also President of the Advisory Committee for the Revision of the Constitution of the Fifth French Republic .

On May 28, 1998, he was elected to succeed René Huyghe as a member of the Académie française , where he took the fifth armchair (armchair 5) until his death.

He was also an honorary doctor of the Pantion University of Athens , the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens , the Université Libre de Bruxelles , the University of Lausanne and the Universidad de Costa Rica as well as a Corresponding Member of the Royal Moroccan Academy and the Academy of Athens . He was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor and the Ordre national du Mérite and the Croix de guerre . Vedel was also commander of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques and grand officer of the Moroccan order Ouissam Alaouite .
