René Huyghe

Huyghe ( Erasmus Prize , 1966)

René Huyghe (born May 3, 1906 in Arras , Pas-de-Calais , † February 5, 1997 in Paris ) was a French art historian .

Life

After attending school, Huyghe studied philosophy and aesthetics at the Sorbonne and the École du Louvre . After completing his studies, he became assistant to the curator for painting at the Louvre in 1930 , before becoming not only chief curator there, but also professor at the École du Louvre in 1937. In 1951 he accepted a professorship for art history at the Collège de France .

In 1960 he succeeded Robert Kemp as a member of the Académie française and took the fifth seat ( armchair 5 ) in it until his death .

In 1966, together with Herbert Read , he was awarded the Erasmus Prize by the Dutch Praemium Erasmianum Foundation for his exceptionally important contributions to culture .

After his death, Georges Vedel took over the fifth seat of the Académie française.

Publications

In addition to these activities, he was not only the editor of art and art history magazines such as L'Amour de l'Art and Quadrige , but also numerous specialist books and biographies of painters such as Tizian , Paul Cézanne , Vincent van Gogh , Eugène Delacroix , Paul Gauguin and Antoine Watteau .
