Georgios Karaiskakis is a municipality in the southeast of the Greek region of Epirus . It is located in the mountainous east of the Arta regional district and consists of 84 inhabited villages, of which only twelve have a population of more than 100. The largest settlement is Panagia with 450 inhabitants, the administrative seat of the municipality is in the local community Ano Kalendini, whereby the most important municipal institutions are in the village Epano Sesi (247 inhabitants).
The community was created on January 1, 2011 from the merger of three communities, which in turn were formed in 1997 from 16 small rural communities. One of these parishes was then named after Georgios Karaiskakis , a general during the Greek Revolution who was born in Skoulikaria and is considered a national hero in Greece. The name passed to the new congregation in 2011.
Georgios Karaiskakis stretches between the Arachthos and Acheloos rivers . Two mountain massifs shape the landscape: in the south the northern part of the Ori Valtou with the Gavrovo ( 1852 m ) as the highest point of the municipality, in the northeast the southern part of the rocky, horseshoe-shaped massif of the Kanalia or Kokkinolakkos ( 1796 m ). The community around the rocky mountains is largely covered by forest; the entire region is a Natura 2000 area under nature protection.
The waters of the mountains are collected by the Kalendinis river, which rises in the northwest of the municipality and flows into the Pournari reservoir at around 150 m above sea level in the neighboring municipality of Nikolaos Skoufas , where it joins the waters of the Arachthos. The surrounding parishes are (clockwise, starting in the north) Kendrika Tzoumerka , Argithea , Agrafa , Amfilochia and Nikolaos Skoufas.
The area of the community, which is still very remote today, belongs to the area of the legendary Armatolen and Klephten , brigands who rebelled against Ottoman rule in the 18th and 19th centuries. Sights are some older monasteries and churches.
