Georgios Katsifaras

Georgios Katsifaras ( Greek Γεώργιος Κατσιφάρας , * 1935 in Kalentzi ; † August 8, 2012 ) was a Greek politician of the Panellinio Sosialistiko Kinima (PASOK) and multiple minister.

Life

Katsifiras attended high school in Patras and after finishing school in 1954 he worked for Georgios Papandreou , before he was a member of the campaign team of his son Andreas Papandreou , who was elected for the first time as a member of the Vouli ton Ellinon , the Greek parliament , in 1964 . After the election he became the private secretary of Andreas Papandreou and his political coordinator.

Because of his political attitude, after the beginning of the military dictatorship that lasted until 1974, he was arrested by the security authorities in 1968 and was in exile in the village of Thermo in Aetolia-Acarnania from August 1968 to May 1971 before he managed to escape into exile in Canada in 1972 . After the end of the military dictatorship, he returned to Greece in July 1974 and, along with Andreas Papandreou, was one of the co-founders of the Panellinio Sosialistiko Kinima (PASOK) on September 3, 1974, in which he became a member of the Central Committee (ZK) and its first press spokesman.

In the 1981 elections, Katsifaras himself was elected member of parliament for the first time and represented an electoral district in Athens for many years . Shortly afterwards, on October 21, 1981, Papandreou, who became Prime Minister after the successful election , appointed him to the post of Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Office. As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he succeeded Efstathios Iotas as Minister for the Merchant Navy on July 5, 1982 and held this office until the end of the term of office of the first Papandreou cabinet on May 6, 1985. May 1985 first deputy minister for trade and was then from April 25 to October 31, 1986 as the successor of Nikolaos Akritidis acting minister of trade.

On September 24, 1990, Katsifaras was re-elected as a member of the Central Committee at the second PASOK congress and, after his party's victory in the parliamentary elections in 1993, was reappointed by Prime Minister Papandreou on October 13, 1993, as Minister for the Merchant Navy in his third cabinet, the he was a member until January 22, 1996. On April 17, 1994, he was re-elected as a member of the PASOK Central Committee at the third party congress and was confirmed in this position at the fourth party congress in June 1996 and at the fifth party congress in March 1999.
