Anastasios Peponis

Anastasios Peponis ( Greek Αναστάσιος Πεπονής , born January 1, 1924 in Athens ; † August 8, 2011 ) was a Greek politician of the PASOK .

Life

During the occupation of Greece in World War II, Peponis was involved in the resistance movement of the Panhellenic Union of the fighting youth (Πανελλήνιος Ένωσις Αγωνιζόμενων Νέων, PEAN). After the war he studied law and was chairman of the National Progressive Center Union (Εθνική Πολιτική Ένωσις Κέντρου, EPEK) between 1951 and 1952.

He then worked as a journalist in radio active and was known nationally from 1964 to 1965 when he became the Director General of the Greek broadcaster the first tentative television stations introduced in Greece. During the period of the Greek military dictatorship from 1967 to 1974, he was involved in the resistance against the regime of Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos and was therefore arrested five times. Later he lived temporarily in exile .

After the end of the colonel's regime, he became involved in PASOK, founded by Andreas Papandreou , and was elected for the first time as a member of parliament in 1977, to which he was a member until 2000. Between 1981 and 1984 he was also a member of the 1st European Parliament .

After PASOK's electoral victory over Nea Dimokratia , he first became Minister for Industry and Energy in October 1981 and held this post in Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou's first cabinet until July 5, 1982. Between January 17, 1984 and 1985 he was without a minister Division in this cabinet.

In the second Papandreou cabinet, he was Minister for Industry, Minister for Research and Technology and Minister for Energy and Natural Resources between October 1986 and July 1989. He was also a minister to the Prime Minister from March 17 to July 2, 1989.

From October 13, 1993 to December 28, 1994, he again took over the post of minister to the Prime Minister in the third Papandreou cabinet. In this office he made a significant contribution to the legislation and organization of the public service. After becoming Minister of Justice on February 10, 1995, he was Minister of Industry, Energy and Technology between September 15, 1995 and January 22, 1996.

Most recently he was Minister for Health and Social Solidarity in the first cabinet of Konstantinos Simitis from January 22 to September 1996 . Peponis died of complications from prolonged heart disease .
