Cabinet of Konstantinos Simitis I
The Konstantinos Simitis I cabinet was formed on January 22, 1996 in Greece by Konstantinos Simitis and replaced the Andreas Papandreou III cabinet after Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou's resignation due to illness . Akis Tsochatzopoulos had previously acted as provisional officer for the Prime Minister from January 17 to January 22, 1996. The cabinet existed until September 25, 1996, when it was replaced by the second Simitis cabinet .
The Simitis government, with its Panellinio Sosialistiko Kinima (PASOK), had 46.88 percent of the votes due to the previous parliamentary election on October 10, 1993, and thus 170 seats in the 300-seat parliament due to the increased proportional representation . In the parliamentary elections on September 22, 1996 , PASOK lost 5.39 percentage points and only got 41.49 percent, but still received an absolute majority with 162 seats due to the current proportional representation.
