Reign
After the parliamentary elections in Greece in 2007 , which the Nea Dimokratia only narrowly won, Karamanlis got the opportunity to continue his government work with the completion of the Egnatia Odos and the Acropolis Museum . However, as a result of the global financial crisis , five member states of the Eurozone violated the Stability and Growth Pact in December 2008, one of them was Greece. The country's economy collapsed as the crisis increasingly affected the shipping and tourism industries. The Karamanlis government was unable to cope with the situation and the pressure on the Prime Minister continued to increase, both domestically and internationally. In spring 2009 the EU Commission initiated an excessive deficit procedure against Greece, which Karamanlis wanted to counteract with an austerity package. However, the measures were not sufficient to defuse the financial crisis and save the country from an impending recession ; So Karamanlis decided to let the people decide whether they would like to express their confidence in him and his government, and at the beginning of September 2009 asked President Karolos Papoulias to dissolve the parliament, which should lead the country to new elections.
sequence
In the early parliamentary elections in Greece in 2009 , the conservative Nea Dimokratia was only the second strongest force behind the social democratic PASOK .
The Karamanlis II cabinet was replaced by the Giorgos Andrea Papandreou cabinet .
