Cabinet Andreas Papandreou II

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Andreas Papandreou II cabinet was formed on June 5, 1985 in Greece by Andreas Papandreou and replaced the first Papandreou cabinet . The cabinet existed until July 2, 1989, when it was replaced by the Tzannis Tzannetakis cabinet .

In the parliamentary elections of June 3, 1985 , the social democratic Panellinio Sosialistiko Kinima (PASOK) Papandreous suffered only slight losses of 2.24 percentage points compared to the parliamentary election of October 18, 1981 and achieved 45.82 percent of the vote. Due to the increased proportional representation, it had 161 of the 300 seats in parliament and thus a disproportionate absolute majority.

In the parliamentary election on June 18, 1989 , however, PASOK suffered a severe defeat of 6.7 percentage points and only got 39.1 percent of the vote and 125 seats. The Nea Dimokratia (ND), led by Konstantinos Mitsotakis, missed an absolute majority despite a gain of 3.5 percentage points to 44.3 percent and only had 145 seats. Since Mitsotakis could not form a one-party government and did not want to form a coalition government due to an electoral reform previously passed by PASOK, the former Minister for Public Works Tzannis Tzannetakis , who belonged to the ND, formed a coalition government with the left-wing alliance Synaspismos , which at that time also included the Communist Party Of Greece (KKE).
