Vassiliki "Vasso" Papandreou ( Greek Βασιλική "Βασω" Παπανδρεου , born July 31, 1944 in Valimitika , Achaia Prefecture ) is a Greek politician ( PASOK ). She was the Greek Minister and European Commissioner for Employment, Industrial Reform and Social Affairs .
Life
Papandreou studied economics in Athens and London and received his PhD from the University of Reading in 1981. During the time of the Greek military dictatorship , Papandreou lived mostly abroad. After the fall of the dictatorship, she returned to her homeland and was one of the founders of the social democratic party PASOK.
From 1989 to 1993 she was the first woman to be a member of the European Commission and in the Delors II Commission responsible for employment, industrial reform and social affairs. From 1996 to 2004 she held various ministerial posts in the Greek government. She initially acted as development minister; She later became Minister of Internal Affairs, Public Administration and Decentralization and, from October 2001, Minister of Environment, Regional Planning and Public Works.
