Gerald Knaus

Gerald Knaus (* 1970 in Bramberg , Salzburg ) is an Austrian sociologist and migration researcher. He is co-founder and chairman of the European Stability Initiative (ESI) think tank .

Life

Knaus studied philosophy , politics and economics in Oxford , Brussels and Bologna .

In 1999 Gerald Knaus co-founded the European Stability Initiative , a liberal think tank in Sarajevo known for its migration concepts. He taught economics at the State University of Chernivtsi in Ukraine and worked for various NGOs and international organizations in Bosnia for five years . He was Director of the Lessons Learned and Analysis Unit (LLA) of the EU Department of UNMIK in Kosovo (2001-2004). He is a founding member of the European Council on Foreign Relations and was an Associate Fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard Kennedy School of Governance in the United States for five years , where he taught state building and interventions in 2010/2011. In 2016/2017 Gerald Knaus was Mercator-IPC Senior Fellow in Istanbul . He is currently a Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna .

The so-called refugee deal between the EU and Turkey of March 18, 2016 was initiated by Knaus. In 2020 he calls for a renewal of the EU agreement with Turkey in order to end the humanitarian crisis on the Greek islands.

Gerald Knaus lives in Berlin.
