Geraldine is a place in the Timaru District of the Canterbury regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The place was originally called Talbot Forest and was first renamed FitzGerald in 1857 in honor of Canterbury's first superintendent , the Irishman Edward FitzGerald . It was later renamed Geraldine , the name of the family's clan in Ireland .
geography
Geraldine is located approximately 46 km southwest of Ashburton and approximately 35 km north of Timaru . The Waihi River flows through the place and the Orari River and Hae Hae Te Moana River flow east and west past the place. It is only a few kilometers to the foothills of the Four Peaks Range and around 20 km to the coast of the Pacific Ocean .
history
The Geraldine area was settled by Europeans in the 1840s. In 1854, the settler Samuel Hewlings built the first bark hut on what is now Talbot Street . He married the Māori Nga Hei and planted a totara tree on the occasion of the birth of his daughter , which is still in the place today.
Geraldine got a councilor in 1884 and became an independent borough in 1905 , but in 1908 it was incorporated into the constituency of Ashburton and the local hotels closed. Alcohol was not served until 1950, when the Geraldine Licensing Trust Hotel reopened.
population
In the 2013 census, the town had 2301 inhabitants, 2.7% more than in the 2006 census.
economy
The place is the center of an agricultural area in which dairy farming, sheep and cattle breeding, deer breeding, arable farming and agriculture are carried out. The surrounding state forest is also managed from Geraldine . The place has u. a. a reputation as a place for artists and craftsmen who sell their works in the city or nearby studios.
Attractions
Geraldine has a village-like atmosphere with forests and old settler houses. In the vicinity of Geraldine is the Peel Forest , a stone pebble forest , in which, in addition to a rich bird life, remains of the early European settlement can be found.
