Geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate is a chemical compound belonging to the terpene group . From a chemical point of view, it is an ester of geranylgeraniol (an alcohol with four additional C = C double bonds ) and diphosphoric acid .

It is the precursor of all diterpenes and tetraterpenes in biosynthesis and is made from farnesyl pyrophosphate by adding another C5 unit. Acyclic diterpenes such as phytol and phytohormones and carotenoids result from hydrolytic cleavage of the pyrophosphate residue . Phytoene is formed through dimerization , which is the starting compound for all tetraterpenes. Proteins prenylated with geranylgeranyl diphosphate (e.g. Ras , Rac and Rho) are important for some signal transduction pathways and regulatory processes in a cell.
