Gerard López Segú (born March 12, 1979 in Granollers ) is a former Spanish football player and current coach .
Career as a player
society
The midfielder started his professional career in 1996 with the second team at FC Barcelona . In the following season he moved to Valencia . Since he only played the role of supplementary player in his first season at Los Ches and only made eleven appearances (0 goals), the club decided to go on loan. In the 1998/99 season he was supposed to collect match practice at CD Alavès before returning to Valencia the following year. He succeeded and he developed into a high performer at Alavés. In Valencia more and more people were relying on him and he earned a regular place before signing a contract with his youth club, FC Barcelona, again in 2000. The move was worth € 24m to Barcelona. In 2005 he won the Spanish championship with FCB . He stayed in Barcelona for five years until 2005. After a two-year stint at the top French club AS Monaco , Gerard López moved to the Spanish first division club Recreativo Huelva in the summer of 2007 . In his Spanish homeland, however, it only lasted a year and he decided to move abroad again. After López had kept fit at various clubs, he joined FC Girona in February 2009 , for which he made 30 appearances in the Segunda División (four goals) by the end of his career in summer 2011 .
National team
López went through various Spanish youth national teams and played six times for the Spanish national team . He got a total of two hits. All of his appearances for the Spaniards took place in 2000. In the same year he was also part of the squad for the European Football Championship in Holland and Belgium . The team failed in the quarter-finals on eventual European champions France . López was substituted on in the 77th minute of this game. This was his only use during the tournament. He was also used in the Catalan football team.
Career as a coach
In 2013 he took over the coaching of the Catalan football team from Johan Cruyff . He had his first game as a coach on December 30, 2013 against Cape Verde in the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona . For the season 2015/16 López took over in the third-rate Segunda División B relegated second team of FC Barcelona . At the end of the 2016/17 season, he was promoted to the Segunda División .
