Gerbert (family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gerbert family was a southern German bourgeois family, which is documented from the 15th century in the towns of Horb and Rottenburg am Neckar . Members of a line of the sex that was ennobled in the 17th century, as well as other members of the family, carried the names Gerbert von Hornau or von Gerbert and Hornau . One of these family members, who presumably wrongly carried one of the noble names, is Martin Gerbert , who later became the prince abbot of St. Blasien .

Other spellings of the name are Gerwer and Gerber , from which it can be seen that the family was engaged in the craft of tannery . Otto von Alberti suspects that the Horber Gebhard family is identical to the Gerbert.

Status surveys

On June 8, 1584, the brothers Nicolaus, Alexander and Martin Gerber in Strasbourg were awarded a letter of arms by the Count Wilhelm Böcklin von Böcklinsau . The knightly estate Hornau came to Johannes or Hans Georg Gerber in 1627 when, Hans Melchior Liesch von und zu Hornau, the brother of his wife Euphemia Liesch von Hornau sold it to him.

On June 8, 1686, Johann Franz Gerbert, at that time the foundation administrator in the Principality of Brieg , was raised to the bohemian knighthood by Leopold I with the name of Gerbert and Hornau .
