Gerd Schulte-Hillen (born October 1, 1940 in Menden ; † August 4, 2021 ) was a German manager .

Life

Schulte-Hillen studied mechanical engineering and completed a postgraduate course in business administration. In 1969 he became management assistant at the Bertelsmann subsidiary Mohndruck in Gütersloh. In 1973 he took over the management of Gruner + Jahr's gravure printing plant in Itzehoe. In 1981 he took over the chairmanship of the board of Gruner + Jahr. Six years later, in 1987, he became Deputy CEO of Bertelsmann. At the age of 60 he switched to the supervisory boards of Gruner + Jahr and Bertelsmann, each as chairman. From 2000 to 2003 he was also Deputy Chairman of the Presidium and from 2001 to 2003 Deputy Chairman of theBoard of Trustees of the non-profit Bertelsmann Foundation .

After Thomas Middelhoff was dismissed as CEO, Schulte-Hillen also had to leave Bertelsmann in 2003, partly because he had rejected the merger of the BMG music division with Sony Music.

His wife Irene is the chairwoman of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben . His brother Carl-Hermann Schulte-Hillen was the lawyer for the victims in the Contergan scandal .

Work and reception

Under his leadership, Gruner + Jahr multiplied its sales and earnings. The company became Germany's largest press publisher. The defeats in his time at work include the scandal surrounding the forged Hitler diaries in Stern , for the publication of which he was one of the main people responsible, and the failure of the illustrated Tango , which was discontinued in 1995 after 37 editions.

In 2006 he became a co-partner in the controversial BV Deutsche Zeitungsholding ( David Montgomery , Mecom Group ), where he threaded the former G + J newspapers Hamburger Morgenpost , Berliner Zeitung , and Berliner Kurier . In 2007 he sold his 1.6 percent stake and then worked as an independent strategy consultant (strategy consultancy GSH). Schulte-Hillen is portrayed by John Shrapnel in the British television series Hitler For Sale , based on the non-fiction book by Robert Harris .
