Gerhard Bauer (literary scholar)

Gerhard Bauer (born September 18, 1935 in Diez ) is a German philologist and literary scholar .

Life

Bauer studied German, philosophy , theology and history at the Universities of Marburg , Göttingen and Columbus / Ohio . In Marburg, he was with a thesis on "dependency awareness and sense of freedom in the factory in 1962 Hofmannsthal's " doctorate . He then took over until 1969 scientific assistant at the Technical University of Darmstadt , where he in 1969 with a thesis on the "poetics of dialogue" habilitation was. After teaching as a private lecturer at the Universities of Darmstadt, Freiburg and Frankfurt am Main , he accepted an appointment at the Free University of Berlin in 1971 , where he taught modern German literature until his retirement in 2000. In 1975 he signed an appeal for the election of the new KPD and was subsequently suspended from duty. He was a member of the Berlin Committee on Freedom for Horst Mahler. After the student strike in 1976/77 he was able to return to the civil service.

Bauer held visiting professorships at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1981 and at Peking University in 1989/90; he also worked as an external reviewer for Makerere University in Kampala in 1982/83 .
