Gerhard Daum (born September 30, 1956 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German composer , musician and music producer who specializes in film music.

Life

Daum was born in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1956 and developed an interest in music as a child. He played the trumpet and performed with various brass bands . As a teenager he also learned guitar and piano before he began studying music. Daum attended the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe and graduated with a music diploma, with the classical guitar as the main instrument. During his studies he spent a semester at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz , where he focused on jazz and improvisation .

After completing his studies, Daum began working as a guitar teacher at the Jazz & Rock School in Freiburg in 1985 . During this time he toured Europe with his own jazz and rock ensemble, the Gerhard Daum Quartet. He performed in Germany, France, Switzerland and Austria. In 1993 he founded the Gerhard Daum Music Edition and in 1995 the label ToneWorks Records.

His focus shifted to film music after Bayerischer Rundfunk offered him a job in Munich . Inspired by composers such as Ennio Morricone , Bernard Herrmann , John Barry and John Williams , Daum began to compose for German films and television series.

In 1997 Daum moved to Hollywood , where he took music ethnology courses at California State University in Northridge and a masterclass in film music at UCLA . Daum was able to gain international experience here and composed film music for productions like Felon .

Today Daum lives in Berlin , where he continues to compose music for various productions.

Daum is a composer who has composed music for films, television, advertising and video games in Germany and the USA and has received several awards for his works.

The television series Daum has composed for include Forsthaus Falkenau , Die Garmisch-Cops and the crime scene . He also wrote music for independent films such as reflex action , Hollywood Kills , Prince of Swine and particularly the Hollywood action movie Felon . The music for this film was performed in 2009 by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich on the night of the film music.

His music for the image film Every Child Counts won the 2001 NTVA Music Competition Gold Award.

Daum also composed music for various documentaries, such as the German film Hindenburg - The Man Who Made Hitler Chancellor and the US documentary That Which I Love Destroys Me , which won the Voice Award in 2015.

In addition to film music, Daum has also produced several solo CD projects. His debut album, a world music project entitled Mental Voyager - A Music Journey , was first released in 1993 and then in 2014 on the ToneWorks Records label. A second album followed in 1996, Mental Voyager - Voiceland , which was one of the few Dolby Surround releases at the time . The album consists of seven songs, a postmodern, neoclassical crossover between epic, symphonic elements, classical solo voices and rock, combined with electronic sound design. The Bavarian Radio Choir , the Cambridge Consort Voices and the Historical Ensemble Regensburg contribute with singing to the songs.

In 2015, Daum released another solo project on ToneWorks Records, Epic Drama , a collection of epic tracks for orchestra, electric guitar, drums, solo vocals and choirs in a post-modern, neoclassical rock, symphonic style.

In 2017, Film Music Suites was also released on ToneWork Records. The album presents a collection of original film music themes that Daum has for u. a. Tatort composed and orchestrated it as suites for this album. All pieces were recorded by the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra , conducted by Hannes Ferrand.

Under the Gerhard Daum Music Edition, Daum has also been composing and producing music for the professional media industry since 2001, which is licensed worldwide in the fields of film, TV, computer games and trailers.
