Gerhard Viktor Friedrich Johannes Eberlein (born January 16, 1858 in Freiburg in Silesia , Schweidnitz district ; † August 20, 1923 in Strehlen , Strehlen district ) was a German Protestant theologian and church historian .

Life

Eberlein was born as the son of the principal and senior teacher Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Eberlein (born November 23, 1800 in Löwenberg in Silesia ; † October 16, 1872 in Freiburg in Silesia) and his wife Johanna Henrietta, née Hübler, widowed Hartmann (born December 18, 1872 in Freiburg, Germany) 1812 in Grünberg in Silesia ; † June 5, 1884 in Freiburg in Silesia). Gerhard Eberlein completed a degree in theology at the University of Breslau , from which he graduated with a licentiate . He worked as a pastor in Rybnik , Royn , Groß-Strehlitz and finally from November 1, 1906 as superintendent of the parish of Strehlen. He also taught church history at the University of Breslau.

Eberlein was elected to the Silesian Provincial Synod , of which he was President from 1920 , and was appointed to the General Synod in Berlin . He was the chairman of the Silesian Pastors' Association, of which he was a co-founder, and played a key role in the Silesian Hymnal Commission, which published the Silesian Provincial Hymn in 1908. He was a member of the examination board of the Provincial Church and together with others founded the Silesian Preachers' Conference. At his instigation, the Evangelical Church Gazette for Silesia was founded, which he sponsored with numerous reports. He also took part in the conference for the Silesian Synodal Deaconry and was ultimately its chairman. After the collapse of the empire and the state church in 1918, he became a member of the constituent assembly and the constitutional committee of the Church of the Old Prussian Union .

Eberlein published numerous individual studies on the Silesian church history, which he had published mainly in the correspondence sheet of the Association for the History of the Evangelical Church of Silesia . For over 30 years he was the editor of all publications of this association.

On September 16, 1884, Gerhard Eberlein married Anna Luise Caroline Pyrkosch (born July 1, 1865 in Rybnik; † December 24, 1937 in Strehlen) in Rybnik. The couple had seven children who reached adulthood. Five sons became theologians following the example of their father, and two daughters married pastors. Several grandchildren also devoted themselves to theology. Gerhard Eberlein's research on the history of the Church in Silesia was continued and summarized by his son Hellmut Eberlein (born March 13, 1890 in Royn; † July 14, 1957 in Lorch , Württemberg) in the book Schlesische Kirchengeschichte (Goslar: Verlag der Schlesische Evang. Zentralstelle 1952) .
