Gerhard Fuchs (journalist)

Gerhard Fuchs (born May 5, 1929 in Halle ; † April 6, 2019 in Leipzig ) was a party official, journalist and university professor in the GDR who was director of the journalism section at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig from 1978 to 1990 .

Life

Gerhard Fuchs, son of a worker, attended eight-year elementary school until 1943 , after which he was trained as a “young helper” at the Deutsche Reichsbahn until the end of the war in 1945 . From 1945 to 1948 he completed an apprenticeship at the newspaper publisher Freiheit in Halle, where he then worked as a typesetter, operations assistant and then advertising manager. In 1951 he attended the SED state party school in Saxony-Anhalt and then worked as a political employee at the SED Central Committee . In 1955 he went back to Halle, where he worked for the SED district newspaper Freiheit as editor and later as deputy editor-in-chief. From 1959 to 1965 he was editor-in-chief of the SED district newspaper Freies Wort in Suhl (successor to Yvonne Freyer ). 1963/1964 he studied at the party college of the CPSU in Moscow . From September 1965 to 1974 he was editor-in-chief of the SED district organ Das Volk in Erfurt (successor to Rolf Schablinski ). During this time he was also chairman of the Erfurt district board of the Association of Journalists of the GDR (VDJ) and from 1967 to 1974 a member of the SED district leadership in Erfurt. From 1967 to 1972 and again from May 1979 he was a member of the presidium of the VDJ.

In 1974 he switched to the journalism section in Leipzig as an associate professor . After completing his doctorate in 1977, he was appointed full professor for "Journalistic Work Process" in 1978 and at the same time took over as director of the journalism section, which he held until his dismissal in the course of the peaceful revolution in the GDR in 1990 (successor to Emil Dusiska ). In 1990, Fuchs took early retirement .
