Gerhard Hafner (lawyer)

Gerhard Hafner (born August 3, 1943 in Vienna ) is an Austrian lawyer . From 1990 to 2008 he was Professor of International Law at the University of Vienna and from 1997 to 2001 he was a member of the International Law Commission of the United Nations . In addition, he acted as head of the department for general international law in the Austrian Foreign Ministry , for which he also worked as a legal advisor. He has been a member of the Institut de Droit international since 2007 .

Life

Gerhard Hafner was born in 1943 in Vienna and studied from 1961 to 1965 law at the university in his hometown , where he also in 1966 received his doctorate , as well as in Luxembourg , Paris and at the Academy of International Law in The Hague . In 1967/1968 he devoted himself to further studies, in particular to the Soviet conception of international law, at the Lomonossow University in Moscow .

From 1970 he worked as an assistant and, after completing his habilitation in 1983, as a lecturer in the department for international law and international relations at the Faculty of Law at the University of Vienna. In addition, between 1971 and 1995 he was seconded several times to the international law office of the Austrian Foreign Ministry , where he headed the department for international commercial law in 1983 and the department for general international law from 1993 to 1995. Since 2004 he has acted as legal advisor to the ministry. He also represented his home country repeatedly at international organizations and conferences. From 1997 to 2001 he was a member and 2001 Vice-President of the International Law Commission of the United Nations . He has been a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague since 2002.

Gerhard Hafner has been a professor at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna since 1980 . From 1990 to 2008 he was also professor of international law at the University of Vienna, where he was the director of the Institute for European Law, International Law and Comparative Law from 2005 to 2007. In addition, he worked as a visiting professor at various universities abroad, such as at the Comenius University in Bratislava , at Stanford University , at the University of Paris II and at the University of Pierre Mendès-France Grenoble II . Since 2006 he has also been a professor at the University of Law in Bratislava . In 2008 he taught at the Hague Academy of International Law.

Gerhard Hafner has been married since 1971 and has two sons.

Awards

Gerhard Hafner has been a full member of the Institut de Droit international since 2007 , to which he was previously an associate member since 2001. He is also a holder of the Golden Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria and the Federal Medal of Honor as well as a Knight ( Chevalier ) of the French Ordre des Palmes Académiques .
