Gerhard Heimerl
Gerhard Heimerl (born October 16, 1933 in Neudorf near Marienbad , Czechoslovakia ) is a German transport scientist. He is professor emeritus for railways at the University of Stuttgart . His scientific focal points include the railway industry and, in particular, the transport industry .
He developed the so-called Heimerl route ( new Wendlingen – Ulm line ) presented in 1988 as an alternative to the upgraded line / new line Plochingen – Günzburg . This ultimately resulted in the traffic concept presented in 1994 as Stuttgart 21 .
Career
After graduating from high school in Kronach (Upper Franconia), Gerhard Heimerl studied civil engineering at the TH Munich until 1958 . There he became a member of the student union Polytechnischer Club in 1954 , today fraternity Franco-Bavaria Munich . He later became a member of the Hilaritas Stuttgart fraternity . He held several honorary positions in both student associations. In 1958 he entered the service of the Deutsche Bundesbahn . In 1961 he came to the TH Stuttgart as an assistant to Professor Walther Lambert , where he completed his doctorate in 1964. From 1964 to 1973 he worked for the Deutsche Bundesbahn. He was temporarily station master in Nagold . After working for the Federal Railway Directorate in Stuttgart, Augsburg, Nuremberg, the Federal Ministry of Transport in Bonn and the Federal Railway Headquarters in Frankfurt, from where he also worked for the international railway association UIC in Paris, he was appointed to the University of Stuttgart in 1973. In 1975 he followed Professor Lambert as director of the Transport Science Institute, which he headed until his retirement in 2000. His successor was Ullrich Martin .
In February 1994 he ran for the post of rector of the University of Stuttgart, but was defeated by the incumbent Heide Ziegler . The Sudeten German Academy of Sciences and Arts appointed him a full member of the natural science class in 2009.
