Gerhard "Doggy" Hund (2011)

Gerhard "Doggy" Hund (born April 21, 1943 in Vienna ; † September 5, 2015 in Cologne ) was a German trombonist and leader of the Maryland Jazz Band of Cologne , one of the oldest German jazz formations in the New Orleans style . The (retired) headmaster of the Ulrichschule in Kerpen- Sindorf devoted himself with the band to music in the style of the Preservation Hall and maintained friendly contacts with the jazz legends from New Orleans .

Career

Hund grew up in a musical household, the mother was a piano teacher in Cologne. He had been taking piano lessons since he was eight, he had been playing guitar since he was ten, and when he was 15 he began playing the trombone in the trombone choir of the YMCA in Cologne, which existed in the 1950s. The main instrument at that time, however, was the piano.

At the end of 1959 he became a pianist in the Maryland Jazz Band, which had just been founded as a school band, and switched to the trombone six weeks later. This is where the foundation stone for the love of old jazz was laid. From 1963 to 1965 Hund was a regular soldier with the pioneers in Cologne and headed a “company-owned dance band” (utility music). After his studies (1965 to 1968 in Bonn) he moved to Kerpen and after a short period of acclimatization he took over the position of organist in the evangelical parish of Kerpen on a substitute basis (for about seven years). During this time, church music was, alongside music in school lessons (1973 to 1979 GGS Bergheim-Oberaußem as vice-principal, from 1979 to 2008 school principal and music teacher Ulrichschule Kerpen-Sindorf), Hund's main musical field of activity.

Grave in the Melaten cemetery

In 1975 the Maryland Jazz Band was re-established and played on many occasions in the entire Rhein-Erft district and soon in all of North Rhine-Westphalia as well as in Holland and Belgium. The band still plays today under the name New Orleans Jazz Band of Cologne . Later there were also other international concerts, including in New Orleans . He also played in the Traditional Association in Frankfurt in 1993 and in the Band of Friends in 1994 with Reimer von Essen , Trevor Richards and other musicians in Hamburg.

From 1983 to 2013 he was the artistic director of the annual International Jazz Night (later: Internationales Jazzweekend) in his hometown of Kerpen .

His grave is located in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (hall 25 (X)).

Dog was the father of Ulrich Kortenkamp .

Connections to New Orleans / USA

In 1979 the first trip to New Orleans to study jazz music at its roots took place and was then repeated annually in order to cultivate contacts and friendships with the originals, especially in the Preservation Hall . Doggy Hund followed the example of the drummer Barry Martyn, who brought musicians from New Orleans to Europe as early as 1963.

Awards

In 1994 all members of the band were given honorary citizenship of the city of New Orleans , together as a group and individually for each individual musician.

In 2010 Doggy Hund was awarded the Rhein-Erft district's culture prize. In 2014 he received the Keeper of the Flame in Osnabrück as a personality who has made a name for himself in traditional jazz in Europe .
