The New Orleans Jazz Band of Cologne (formerly Maryland Jazz Band of Cologne) is a 1959 by brothers Peter Colditz ( clarinet ) and Rüdiger Colditz ( Cornet founded) as a student group band of Traditional Jazz in New Orleans style . It existed until 1967 and then re- founded in 1975 with the original members in Kerpen . From then on, Gerhard “Doggy” Hund (1943–2015, trombone) took over the management and took care of the group's musical activities until his death in autumn 2015. According to the wishes of the late band leader Doggy Hund, the band no longer appears as the Maryland Jazz Band of Cologne since the beginning of 2016 , but under the new name New Orleans Jazz Band of Cologne with a slightly different line-up (not only due to the new line-up of the trombone). On May 4, 2019, the band celebrated their 60th anniversary with a big anniversary concert in the Capitol Theater Kerpen .

Supporting musicians in New Orleans

In 2005, after the Katrina hurricane disaster , the Maryland Jazz Band collected around 25,000 euros through charity concerts and thus helped musicians who were personally friends in dire need. This has intensified the personal contacts between the band and New Orleans. The band is allowed to officially give a concert in the Preservation Hall during their stays in New Orleans .; Local musicians play in the band during the concerts in New Orleans.

In 2006 and 2008 the Maryland Jazz Band played in New Orleans in Howlin 'Wolf and in Abita Springs in the Old Opry at two major events: "Rent Parties" - to finance aid projects for the Katrina victims, the band played nationally and internationally famous musicians from New Orleans. In 2006 the band was featured on Channel 4's Morning News .
