Gerhard Kirschbaum

Gerhard Kirschbaum (born December 16, 1922 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) is a former German politician ( SED ). He was mayor of Berlin-Pankow from 1961 to 1971 .

Life

Kirschbaum did military service in the Wehrmacht during the Second World War . In 1946 he became a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). He worked as a manager in VEB Housing and VEB Kraftverkehr in East Berlin . From 1955 to 1961 he was director of the municipal housing administration in Berlin-Mitte . Kirschbaum qualified as a political scientist.

From May 25, 1961 to January 14, 1971, he served as district mayor of Berlin-Pankow. At the same time he was a member of the SED district leadership and city district councilor. When he took office at the age of 39, he was the youngest district mayor in East Berlin. He had asked to be recalled for health reasons. In October 1967 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.
