Gerhard Klages
Gerhard Klages (born September 11, 1915 in Holzminden ; † September 7, 2017 in Mainz ) was a German physicist .
Life
After graduating from high school in 1933, Klages studied physics at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where Peter Debye particularly influenced him. During the Second World War , his doctoral thesis was interrupted by being drafted into the Air Force , where he had to deal with the theory and application of radio measurement technology. In autumn 1941 he obtained a leave of absence for study purposes, which he used at the end of his doctorate in 1942 with the dissertation dispersion of ultra-short waves in polar liquids with several relaxation times .
In 1946 , Klages completed his habilitation in experimental physics , and then in 1947 he was able to be appointed to the University of Mainz , where he initially taught as a university lecturer and then as a professor at the Institute of Physics. Apart from a visiting professorship in Cairo in the 1960s, he stayed at the University of Mainz until his retirement in 1980.
Klages established microwave physics in Mainz to determine the electrical and geometric structure of molecules, especially in molecular liquids. He succeeded in expanding the frequency range investigated, so that his laboratory became one of the leading international laboratories in the field of dielectric spectroscopy .
Klages was held in high regard as an academic teacher. Comprehensive support for his students, graduate students and doctoral students and personal contact have always been of particular concern to him. He imparted the basic physical knowledge to the medical students through lectures, internships and the continued short textbook of physics by HA Stuart.
