Gerhard Lothar von Büren (* around 1600; † January 28, 1660 ) was a noble canon and cathedral dean in the prince-bishopric of Speyer .

Origin and family

He came from a noble city dynasty from Unna . It is unclear whether there is a relationship with the Westphalian noble family von Büren . The latter has a lion in its coat of arms, but the Büren from Unna have three Moorish heads with red bands on a silver background. Several family members appear as mayors of the city of Unna.

He was the son of Matthias von Büren, Herr zu Huckarde and Mengede , and his wife Margaretha von Galen , sister of Dietrich von Galen. His son Christoph Bernhard von Galen (1606–1678) - the cousin of Gerhard Lothar von Büren - served as Prince-Bishop of Münster . The parents' epitaph is preserved in the Protestant St. Remigius Church in Mengede .

Life

Gerhard Lothar von Büren entered the clergy. On November 4, 1636 he became cathedral custodian of Speyer, where he officiated as cathedral capitular in 1632 . During the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War , the cathedral chapter stayed mostly outside Speyer , Bishop Philipp Christoph von Sötern resided mainly in Trier anyway and was imprisoned from 1635 to 1645. During this time, Gerhard Lothar von Büren was the canon who showed the greatest presence in Speyer and also took care of the cathedral . In 1636 he traveled with cathedral dean Erasmus von der Horst to the Regensburg Reichstag , where she was the delegate of the Trier and Speyer cathedral chapters in the election of Ferdinand III. acted as the German king.

After the death of Bishop Sötern, the cathedral chapter elected him one of the governors in the bishopric. On February 6, 1653, Buren was elected cathedral dean of Speyer. Expressly one commemorated his achievements during the past war time when he was often alone in Speyer responsible for the cathedral chapter and had no financial income. He retained this office until his death. At the same time he was provost of St. Guido . On January 17, 1660, he appointed his cousin Christoph Bernhard von Galen, Prince-Bishop of Münster, to be his executor.

His brother Matthias August von Büren also lived as a canon in Speyer. Successor as cathedral dean was the future bishop Johann Hugo von Orsbeck .
