Gerhard Paul Raabe (born November 4, 1950 in Obrighoven near Wesel ) is a German chemist and professor of theoretical chemistry at RWTH Aachen University .

Life

After attending high school in Wesel, a chemistry laboratory assistant teaching at Bayer AG in Leverkusen , the 18-month military service in the Air Force of the Armed Forces and a short professional activity as a laboratory assistant at Bayer Gerhard Raabe attended from August 1972 to the Ruhr College in Essen , on which he received the general university entrance qualification in December 1974 . In the summer semester 1975 he went to study the chemistry of the RWTH Aachen, he with a thesis in theoretical chemistry in 1980 Jörg Fleischhauer completed. He received the Springorum Medal for his excellent academic achievements . As a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation , he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD and awarded the Borchers plaque after completing a dissertation in theoretical chemistry at Fleischhauer. During his doctorate, he became active in the Corps Saxonia-Berlin in Aachen in 1981 .

From 1984 to 1985 he worked as a post-doctoral student with Josef Michl at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, supported by the German National Academic Foundation, on the photochemistry and spectroscopy of highly reactive silicon compounds under matrix isolation conditions. This was followed by activities as a scientific employee of the theoretical chemistry at RWTH Aachen University, as a product development manager for vulcanization accelerators at Akzo-Chemicals in Düren and a 9-month further education in X-ray structure analysis . At the end of 1989 he took over the department for X-ray structure analysis at the Institute for Organic Chemistry at RWTH Aachen University at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research . In 1998 he completed his habilitation there in theoretical chemistry. In January 2003 he was appointed adjunct professor for theoretical chemistry at RWTH Aachen University.

Since 1987 he has been doing research with Josef Michl at the University of Texas at Austin and at the University of Colorado at Boulder, as well as with Syd Hall at the University of Western Australia in Perth . In the last few years until his retirement at the end of 2019, he was a substitute professor at Chair III for Organic Chemistry at RWTH.

Gerhard Raabe's research focuses on the structure of and the bonding in crystals of organic molecules. His scientific work has resulted in 499 publications so far. He is a member of the Computational Chemistry Coalition at RWTH Aachen University.
