from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Josef Michl (born March 12, 1939 in Prague ) is a Czechoslovak - American chemist .

Life

Michl was born in Prague, which was then the capital of the short-lived Czechoslovak Republic (1938–1939), a few days before Nazi Germany annexed the Czech part of the state as a protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia .

Michl studied chemistry at the Charles University in Prague from 1956 and obtained a master's degree from V. Horák and P. Zuman in 1961 . In 1965 he obtained a Ph.D. from the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. with Rudolf Zahradník . Between 1965 and 1970 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow with RS Becker at the University of Houston , with Michael Dewar at the University of Texas at Austin and with FE Harris at the University of Utah . In the meantime, he was research assistant at the Institute for Physical Chemistry of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1967/68 and assistant professor to Jan Linderberg at the Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University in 1968/69 .

In 1970 Michl received his first independent professorship at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City (Research Associate Professor) , in 1971 he became an associate professor , and in 1975 he was given a full professorship. From 1979 to 1984 he was dean ( chairman ). In 1986 Michl moved to the University of Texas at Austin , but stayed with the University of Utah as an adjunct professor . In 1991 he received a call to the University of Colorado Boulder . Since 2006 Michl has also been working as research director for the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic .

In 1976 Michl became a citizen of the United States .

Act

Michl has made important contributions to numerous areas of chemistry during his career: theoretical and experimental aspects of organic photochemistry , magnetic circular dichroism , chemistry and theory of biradicals and biradicaloids, electronic and vibration spectroscopy with polarized light , silicone chemistry and the electronic structure of its components , Theory and experiments on sputtering frozen gases, production, properties and theory of organic metabolic intermediates , cluster ions , molecular building blocks for supramolecular structures and boron chemistry.

Michl was editor of Chemical Reviews from 1984 to 2014 . He is co-author of five specialist books on photochemistry and polarization spectroscopy , is the author of more than five hundred and seventy scientific publications and holds eleven patents.
