Gerhard Schiedewitz

Gerhard Schiedewitz (born March 15, 1925 in Köthen (Anhalt) ; † July 8, 2007 in Neubrandenburg ) was a German journalist . He was editor-in-chief of the SED district newspaper Freie Erde in the Neubrandenburg district in the GDR .

Life

Schiedewitz, son of a carpenter, attended elementary school and was a Reichsbahn assistant from 1940 to 1943 . During the Second World War he did military service in the Wehrmacht from 1943 to 1945 and was a British prisoner of war in May / June 1945 .

After his release he worked as a farm laborer in Koethen. In 1946 he became a member of the SED and from 1946 to 1952 he was a volunteer at the local editorial offices of Freedom in Eisleben , Köthen, Dessau and Halle (Saale) . In 1952 he attended the SED state party school. During his journalism studies at the University of Leipzig , Schiedewitz worked from 1953 to 1962 as a local editor for the Magdeburger Volksstimme , before becoming deputy editor-in-chief there. From 1962 to 1964 he worked as a sector leader in the ideological commission of the SED district leadership in Magdeburg. During this time he obtained his degree in psychology and adult education at the University of Rostock through distance learning.

In 1964 he succeeded Heinrich Thomas as editor-in-chief in Neubrandenburg and at the same time became a member of the SED district leadership. From 1972 he was chairman of the journalists' association in the Neubrandenburg district. During the reunification phase , Schiedewitz ensured that the editorial team was emancipated from party dogmas before he resigned from his offices at the end of 1989. He then worked as an editor for another six months until he retired.

Gerhard Schiedewitz died on July 8th, 2007 after a long illness with his family.
