Gerhard Schreiber (military historian)

Gerhard Schreiber (born July 26, 1940 in Tepl , Sudetenland ; † May 17, 2017 ) was a German naval officer ( retired frigate captain ) and military historian .

After graduating from high school , he joined the German Navy ( Crew X / 61) in 1961 and was trained as a career officer. In 1965/66 he was an inspection officer at the Naval NCO School in Plön. 1966/67 he was a telecommunications officer on the destroyer 6 and the training ship Danube and subsequently at the Mürwik Naval School in Flensburg-Mürwik. From 1968 he studied history and art history at the University of Hamburg . In 1976 he was at Klaus-Jürgen Müller at the Faculty with the thesis Navy leadership and German-Italian politics from 1919 to 1944 for Dr. phil. PhD. The Inspector of the Navy Vice Admiral Günter Luther awarded him a prize in 1977 for his work. In 1978 it became part of the MGFA series Contributions to Military and War History under the title Revisionism and Striving for World Power . Naval command and German-Italian relations established from 1919 to 1944 .

From 1976 to 1996 Schreiber was a research assistant at the Military History Research Office (MGFA) in Freiburg im Breisgau . He published mainly about the time of National Socialism and the German-Italian relations . He was u. a. Contributor to the series The German Reich and the Second World War (Volumes 3 and 8) and, together with Werner Rahn, editor of the multi-volume war diary of the naval warfare 1939–1945 . Its as standard work respected monograph The Italian military internees in the German sphere 1943 to 1945. Betrayed - Despised - Forget was the Italian city with the historic price Guareschi Acqui excellent. He was also a bearer of the German Armed Forces Cross of Honor in Gold and a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and an honorary citizen of the city of Barletta in Apulia / Italy.

Schreiber lived in Gundelfingen near Freiburg im Breisgau.
