Gerhard Schwarz (physicist)
Gerhard Schwarz (born February 3, 1930 in Bremen ; † January 16, 2015 ) was a German physicist and co-founder of the Biozentrum of the University of Basel .
Life
Gerhard Schwarz studied from 1950 to 1955 at the Georg August University in Göttingen , where he obtained his doctorate in 1958 in the group of the later Nobel Prize winner Manfred Eigen . Interrupted by a stay as a postdoc from 1960 to 1962 at the University of Pennsylvania , he continued his work in his own working group at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry until 1969. After his habilitation in 1968 at the Technical University of Braunschweig , he was appointed to the chair for Biophysical Chemistry at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel in 1969 . Schwarz retired in 2000 .
Act
During his many years of research, Schwarz investigated the molecular mode of action of membrane-active substances. He was particularly interested in the interactions between peptides and proteins and lipid membranes based on physico-chemical principles . An important focus in Gerhard Schwarz's research was the development of kinetic measuring methods for the investigation of fast chemical processes. Furthermore, Schwarz developed a method, the so-called “mass conservation plot” approach, with which binding isotherms can be analyzed without a model and thermodynamic processes can be explained . His work provided significant insights into the molecular mechanisms of various membrane functions such as distribution equilibria , pore formation , antibiotic permeation and binding studies.
