Gerhard Stolze
Gerhard Stolze (born October 1, 1926 in Dessau , † March 11, 1979 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ) was a German opera singer ( character tenor ). His numerous recordings testify to his very flexible voice, which he was able to use both lyrically and dramatically, as well as his great acting talent.
Life
At the age of 17, Stolze was drafted into the military and was taken prisoner in Belgium. There he met “Erich, a homosexual director. They played their first plays in the camp and went to the theater together in Zwickau after the war . ”When Stolze fell in love with the painter Gabriele Gretschel“ and she married, Erich took his own life. ”The daughters Lena and Franziska came from this long-standing marriage , both actresses.
The artist studied singing in Dresden with Rudolf Dittrich and made his debut there in 1949. From 1953 to 1961 he sang at the State Opera Unter den Linden , but left Berlin shortly after the Wall was built and moved to Vienna . He advanced to become the best Wagner and Strauss character tenor of his generation, which he repeatedly demonstrated through frequent guest appearances in Bayreuth (from 1951) and Salzburg (from 1959). He had long-term guest contracts with the Stuttgart State Opera , the Hamburg State Opera and the National Theater in Munich . He has made guest appearances at major international opera houses (Covent Garden London, Metropolitan Opera New York etc.). Proud sang in the world premieres of the operas Jakobowski and Colonel von Giselher Klebe , Der Revisor von Werner Egk and Oedipus der Tyrann von Carl Orff .
Proud was diagnosed with polio . This situation made his further life difficult: "He began to drink, tried a new beginning, got divorced, took the name of his second wife, opened a guesthouse with her in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and served breakfast to the guests."
Stolze was married to the opera singer Gerda Prochaska in 1977 . He died in 1979 at the age of 52 and was buried in the Garmisch cemetery in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
