The German Bowl XXXIX , the final of the German Football League (GFL) in the 2017 season , took place on October 7, 2017 in Berlin's Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark .

For the fourth time in a row, the champions of the GFL Nord, the New Yorker Lions from Braunschweig , and the GFL Süd, the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns , faced each other. After three wins in a row for the eleven-time record champions and five-time Eurobowl winners, this time the Unicorns won 14:13 in the pouring rain and after a few ball losses on both sides, thus winning their third championship in seven years.

After a 7:13 deficit at halftime, the Hall quarterback Marco Ehrenfried , one of the few non-Americans in the playmaker position in the GFL, had a pass from his own 25-yard line about 50 yards (45 meters) to Tyler Rutenbeck thrown, which this caught in full swing and carried the remaining 25 yards into the end zone. The extra point kick was successful and should be the winning goal at the end, because seconds before the end of the game, a field goal attempt by the Haller defense was thwarted. Before that, the Braunschweig kicker had already given a field goal attempt.

Although Ehrenfried (10 of 19 pass attempts successful, 3 interceptions) threw two touchdown passes and with a total of 198 pass yards contributed the majority of the Haller offense, which only won 39 yards with ball carriers, the Lions running back David McCants , who won 151 yards and has had both touchdowns, was named MVP in the German Bowl for the second time in his career. His quarterback Casey Therriault, already a three-time German Bowl MVP, was able to contribute 153 yards through throws, which did not end in the Haller end zone.

The way to the German Bowl

The quarter-finals took place on 16./17. September 2017. The semi-finals took place on September 23, 2017 and in each of them the northern champion and the southern champion prevailed. The only bigger surprise of the playoffs were the Frankfurt Universe, which were able to advance to the semi-finals for the first time, which meant that the Dresden Monarchs had already reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2012. As expected, the favorites prevail in all other quarter-finals and semi-finals.
