The German Bowl XL , the final of the German Football League (GFL) in the 2018 season , took place on October 13, 2018 in Berlin's Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark .
Defending champion Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns reached the German Bowl for the fifth time in a row, where they met Frankfurt Universe this year . For the first time ever, two teams from the GFL Süd met each other in a German Bowl. In the first three German Bowls the Ansbach Grizzlies and the Frankfurter Löwen already met teams from the area of today's GFL Süd, but the Löwen only switched from the north to the south group after the German Bowl III.
For Universe, making it to the finals meant the greatest success so far on a national level. The Unicorns prevailed in a tight game with 21:19 and were able to successfully defend their title. With the fourth German championship, the Unicorns also voted themselves the most successful southern team in the history of the GFL.
The way to the German Bowl
Schwäbisch Hall kept a clean slate in the regular season, as in the two previous seasons, with 14 wins in 14 games. As the clear winner of their conference, they won home rights in the play-offs. Frankfurt only had to admit defeat in the two games against Haller and thus secured second place in the southern conference despite deducting points for a license violation.
The quarter-finals took place on September 22nd and 23rd, 2018. In the games, the home teams, i.e. the champions and the runner-up from the north and the south, were able to prevail. The semi-finals took place on September 29, 2018. There the southern champion and the runner-up from the south prevailed for the first time. While the southern champion Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns clearly prevailed against the northern second Dresden Monarchs in regular time , the southern second Frankfurt Universe was only able to win against the northern champion New Yorker Lions in the second extra time .
Course of the game
The first quarter of the game was directed by the Frankfurt team. Early in the game, Andreas Betza managed a touchdown run for Universe, but the extra point that followed was blocked. Only a little later they scored the next touchdown, this time with a successful extra point. At the beginning of the second quarter, the Unicorns finally scored their first touchdown, which also sealed the halftime score of 13: 7 for Frankfurt. Mistakes on both sides prevented further points from being scored in the third quarter. At the beginning of the last quarter, Frankfurt had several opportunities to extend their lead, but the kicker only missed a possible field goal from 39 yards and later from 23 yards away . In the middle of the last quarter Schwäbisch Hall scored their second touchdown and took the lead for the first time. The Unicorns were later able to expand this when they managed to carry a fumble from Frankfurt quarterback Andrew Eiffers back to the touchdown. Frankfurt managed to get another touchdown and change the score to 19:21. However, the subsequent two-point conversion was unsuccessful. Universe then carried out an onside kick and was able to conquer it. They could work their way forward, but their kicker awarded the winning field goal with three seconds remaining.
