In 2005 the research institute became a member of the Leibniz Association. From 1997 to 2013 Wolfgang Franz was President of the ZEW. His successor was Clemens Fuest . Achim Wambach took over the office of President in April 2016.

Outline and goals

In terms of organization, the ZEW is divided into seven research areas and a research group:

  • Labor markets and human resource management
  • Innovation economics and corporate dynamics
  • Digital economy (formerly research area information and communication technologies)
  • International financial markets and financial management
  • Corporate Taxation and Public Finance
  • Environmental and resource economics, environmental management
  • Social security and distribution
  • Market design

ZEW pursues four goals in these sectors:

  • research
  • economic policy advice
  • Promotion of young scientists
  • Formation of opinion in specialist science and the general public

The overarching main research idea at ZEW is the economic analysis and the design of functioning markets and institutions in Europe. The competence of the ZEW is in particular in the field of micro applied ökonometrie and in general calculable equilibrium models. The scientists at ZEW convey their research results on the one hand at scientific conferences and in specialist journals. On the other hand, they also pass this on to the public through studies, publication series and further training events.

Particular attention is paid to the "ZEW Economic Expectations" published monthly by ZEW . They are an important early indicator for economic development in Germany. The expectations for the euro zone, Japan, Great Britain and the USA are also asked.
