Political career

His political career began in 1976 with his election to the city council ( vereador ) of Caxias do Sul. He held this position until 1981. He had entered the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB), which was renamed Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (MDB) in 2017, in which he held a leading position. From 1982 to 1991 he was a state member ( deputado estadual ) in the legislative assembly of Rio Grande do Sul , he was a member of the presidium and chairman of important committees in this state parliament.

In the 1990 elections in Brazil , he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress as a federal representative ( deputado federal ) of his home state . He held the parliamentary position for two legislative terms until 2003. In the elections in Brazil in 2002 he ran for the office of governor and was elected with 3,148,788 valid votes. He replaced Olívio Dutra from the Workers' Party (PT). This term of office lasted only four years from 2003 to 2007. Criticism was expressed by opponents because of his neoliberal policies.

In 2006 he was nominated for the 2006 elections in Brazil as a presidential candidate, but was unable to assert himself as a presidential candidate within the PMDB. Again he tried to get an electoral office in the 2010 elections , this time as a senator for the Federal Senate , but failed because of his electoral opponents.

In August 2018, he was nominated as a vice presidential candidate. The presidential candidate Meirelles also belongs to the MDB, the party of the outgoing 37th President Michel Temer . MDB and Partido Humanista da Solidariedade (PHS) are forming an electoral coalition under the slogan “Essa é a solução” (German: “This is the solution” ).
