Gero von Schulze-Gaevernitz (born September 27, 1901 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † April 6, 1970 in San Agustín (Gran Canaria) ) was a German-American economist and agent in World War II.

Life

Gero von Schulze-Gaevernitz was the son of Gerhart von Schulze-Gaevernitz , professor of economics at the University of Freiburg and a member of the Weimar National Assembly . His mother was Johanna Hirsch (born May 23, 1876 in Mannheim , † 1938 in Ascona ). He had two sisters: Ruth Gaevernitz (born June 12, 1898 in Freiburg im Breisgau; † July 26, 1993 in London ) was a British historian, Margiana von Schulze-Gaevernitz (born July 5, 1904 in Freiburg im Breisgau; † 1989 in Gstaad ) was married to Edmund Stinnes .

He attended the Berthold-Gymnasium Freiburg in Freiburg until his Abitur in 1917 and studied economics , commercial law and history at the universities of Freiburg, Munich and Frankfurt am Main. In 1923 he was at the University of Frankfurt with a dissertation on the credit policy of England during and after the war from 1914 to 1921 PhD . The work appeared as a book in 1924, probably slightly expanded, and was reissued as a reprint in 1980.

In 1925 he emigrated to the USA and from 1928 worked in New York as an investment banker. During the Second World War he was Allen Welsh Dulle's right-hand man in Bern as Special Assistant from 1941 . In 1945 he received the US Medal of Freedom in recognition of his skillful negotiations in Ascona ( Switzerland ), which led to the surrender of a million German troops in Italy - Operation Crossword .
