Ghețari [ ˈgetsarʲ ] or Ghețar ( Hungarian Gyeszár ) is a Romanian village in Alba County . It is part of the municipality of Gârda de Sus .

location

The scattered settlement of Ghețari is located in western Transylvania in the Bihor Mountains . It is located on a mountain plateau north of the Arieșul Mare river . The district capital Alba Iulia is about 75 km southeast.

history

The mountain hamlet has probably existed since the end of the 18th century, although the houses were initially only used seasonally. The first permanently inhabited farms were probably built around 1860.

population

The 116 inhabitants of the place (as of 2002) call themselves all Romanians. The village was only run as a separate unit after the end of World War II; previously it was an unofficial part of the large communities Râul Mare and Scărișoara .

Infrastructure

Until 2013, Ghețari could be reached on steep, unpaved roads that lead up from the Arieșul Mare valley. Public transport did not touch the place. Since spring 2013, the community has been connected to the general road network with a new, asphalt road, especially for visiting the Scarisoara ice cave. Tourism is mainly based on visitors to the ice cave, but the plateau is also popular for winter sports / cross-country skiing. There is also a connection to the Padis plateau via hiking trails. In summer there is a considerable water shortage on the plateau due to the karst subsoil.

Ghețari has been supplied with electricity since 1994. The residents get water from wells.

Attractions

Peştera Scărişoara ice cave

The central tourist attraction is the Peştera Scărişoara ice cave on the edge of the village . Ghețari is the starting point for hikes in the Bihor Mountains.

Others

Ghețari - in particular its economic circumstances and its development potential - was the subject of several dissertations and other publications in the years around 2000 as part of the "Proiect Apuseni", which was accompanied by the Institute for Land Care of the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research was funded. For this reason, a number of scientific papers are available in German for the small village.
